Life in Nijmegen: Autumn

Nijmegen is a city east Netherlands and it was my first home overseas. It is a city where I fell in love with Europe more and a lot of "first time" experiences happened. My stay in Nijmegen taught me a lot about cultural differences, has given me memorable adventures and gave me the chance to meet new friends.

 Autumn in Nijmegen

Though I arrived in the city early June, I never really enjoyed the place until autumn came. During this season mornings are cold but sometimes there are also sunny afternoons.

During sunny afternoons, most of the people go out and enjoy some drinks at the center.
Tip1: Nijmegen is an organized city, the bus numbers, schedules and routes are all posted in every bus station. To learn about the general bus routes, visit the central station.

Tip2: The malls at the center have scheduled shopping hours and usually closes early except for shopping day or market day.
Tip3: Shops often have sale ( goedkoop ), grab as early as you can because if you missed the product will be more expensive.

Tip4: Albert Heijn and Lidl are big grocery shops and relatively cheap. Don't forget your grocery bags because they do not provide free plastic bags for your groceries.

Tip5: When eating out, the customer is expected to clean-up the tables.

Tip6: Try the street foods in Nijmegen like the fries ( friets ), haring ( raw fish with herbs ), pastei in Songda, kibbeling ( fried fish fillet ) and a lot more. It's yummy!

During autumn we enjoyed biking ( I just learned it in this city )  and walking in the afternoon. Because of the cold breeze and the parks nearby, couple dates are not expensive. We also bike from Nijmegen to Groesbeek in sunny autumn mornings.

Most of the houses near city center are row houses and flats. They have some new house designs but most of the row houses are still made of bricks.
From central station to center is quite near, we usually walk to enjoy the changing color of the trees.
This is Nijmegen's coat of arms, on springtime the flowers will bloom again and this view will more colorful. Also at Belvedere Restaurant, the beautiful view of Nijmegen bridge is eyecatching.
Late autumn nights are colder but it's still nice to try the rides and have fun at Nijmegen's family fair.
Nijmegen's only skyscraper ( sort of ) is NXP's 52 degrees building I worked for this company.
During sunset we like to chill and have little picnics by the De Waal, and bike back to the flat.
